does music define the vibe where you go? i suppose it depends on why people pick a certain place to go to. from what i hear, the music in LA korean clubs is horrible yet they still pack it in. or maybe it’s just horrible for people that share my musical tastes, which is also very possible. so, i guess music selection is secondary in the LA korean scene? i know it was secondary at MK in nyc. they played the most eclectic and scattered nights of music there. an hour of trance, then an hour of hip-hop, then an hour of korean. bleh. trying to please everyone, yet, pleasing no one but, like i said, the music is secondary in this decision making process, right?
so, what’s the vibe like at a place where people choose to go because music is the first item on their priority list of the evening? a lot more dancing. a lot more people dancing alone. i’d also say that it’s less aggressive and slightly more open and friendly. it makes sense that it is, though. everyone there operates under the assumption that they all have a common interest, the music. so, everyone is more civil to each other because they see each other as “kindred spirits”.
huge generalizations, i know. some people might want to throw rocks at me.
wait a second. i started this by asking if music defines the vibe, not if music defines the decision. obviously, music defines the vibe at the club where everyone went to for the love of music. i mean, the music is the primary reason for bringing everyone together at a place like that. on the flipside, at the clubs where people go no matter what music is playing, i’d say that music dictates the vibe there too. music is that powerful. it has a degree of control over the place even if people don’t pay much attention to it. this should be totally obvious to everyone when you see the dancefloor clear out at the korean club when they cut the hip hop. or when girls start grinding each other on the speakers when the hip hop is on.
anyway. this post is totally all over the place. sorry about that. i’m having a bout with the verbal diarhhea this morning. pardon me for a second while i wipe…
so yeah. there was a moment at a party recently where the mood was perfection because
1. everyone was there because they loved the music
2. everyone was there to party their balls off
3. i was there with my old friends plus some new friends who were all equally excited to be there
4. we had just sat through the most terrible set of bad bad shit music that killed the vibe
5. a great dj took the decks from the vibe-fucker-uppers and dropped a killer song. and i mean killer!
the song is not so awesome by itself but in that moment that shit just took over and slayed the crowd. we were instantly transformed from a puddle of moping fuck-ups sitting on the grass to a sea of happy-ass bouncing heads going nuts for the dj that saved the moment with that one track. that was the perfect example of cooperation between the venue, the crowd, the expectations and the uplifting power of good fucking music.
now, that was a great moment.
so, what did we cover today….
1. LA korean clubs play bad music
2. so did NYC korean clubs back in the day. (not so sure about recently)
3. places where people go for the music have a better vibe
4. i like music.

on another note, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind comes out today! written by charlie kaufman, the same writer that wrote Being John Malkovich and Adaptation. he’s so creative i could piss.
————————-
on another other note, Dawn of the Dead comes out today as well. the remake of george romero’s zombie classic. it got lukewarm reviews though so i dunno how psyched i am anymore about this one.

your description of that good dj got me thinking of when i’d be chilling @ exit then an awesome track hits. such an adrenaline rush. oh wait. that wasnt’ adrenaline. nvm.
Hey your entries aren’t any shorter and I read the whole damn thing too. haha
haha…yeah. fockin apple juice.
ppl who enjoy music that much are usually high or rolling while listening to it..
what was that moment of perfection?
ahhhh. bless pvd for being a super cheeseball.
i actually enjoy music much more when i’m not high.
i guess i do like brightly colored patterns and plus, it’s springtime! good to know i looked like a damn candy striper on my birthday. super.
Music is indeed powerful. I think knowledge and appreciation for music (I don’t count the crazy Korean teeny bopper genre) is what separates men from true FOBs. Here’s the list of my ENTIRE collection of CDs: 1) Eric Clapton Unplugged, 2) Mariah Carey– Emotions and 3) Disney’s Lion King–Original Sound Track.
i agree. there are clubs i go to for the people. and then there are clubs i go to for the music. The latter is always a guaranteed blast.
salut!
korean clubs in LA are so whacked. It’s not just the music, it’s the people. Not only do they play sorry-ass music but these koreans don’t seem to know how to dance. Plus, these clubs are just packed with fugly people. Not worth spending hundreds of dollars.
Music is one of the most important things in the world! Or at least it should be. But it’s getting worse and worse with every day. It’s all about fuck this and fuck that and hell yeah and that mess. I don’t hate it but there’s much better stuff to listen to. Everyone should love music!
korean clubs sometimes play good music.. depends on the dj and on the club. ive had nites where they are hit and miss. its funny cuz they alwaise stick in the one slow song to get the couples out, but all the depressed ppl back to their tables to get them to drink some more.
huh? i’m so confused.. can’t i chuck one away? I don’t want to chuck him away…
help him with what?
i love charlie. have u read the intro he wrote for the published screenplay of being john malkovitch. it’s HILARIOUS

korean clubs in la do play whack music, but i doubt that the people are there for the music anyway.
lol, good ol’ MK. wasn’t it hilarious how they’d play slow songs in between the different music “sessions”? hip hop for an hour, then slow songs by SOLID, then trance, then slow songs by KOOL, then the occasional dance contest where everyone runs to the dance floor to get a closer look. then another round of slow songs.
good times, man. good times.
I like music too! We have something in common ^.^
i really like that observation you made about the venue being chill-er when everyone’s there for the music first. so right….must have been a very cool night. i remember back in the day when i went to this one particular jungle show…that’s how i felt. =) memories…
